Posts from the Old Blog: The Jagmin DIY Bounce Card

Well after I had my cinch strap, I had to make a bounce card to use with it.

OK, so first my little disclaimer.  I’m a bit embarrassed that my photos suck since this will mostly be read by other photographers.  But this was done in a hurry after a long day of work, after the last diaper was changed, after the kids were in bed, and I was exhausted.  So this is what you get.  Also, I know the haters are going to say “you can spend 3-grand on a camera, but not $20 on lighting accessories!?” Well, my answer, not that I need to answer it at all, is that a) I enjoy making things like this, and b) if I could have made my own D700 from a few items at the craft store for a tiny fraction of the cost of Nikon’s version I would have done that too!!

A while back I saw this video by Peter Gregg, on making a bounce card.

If you don’t want to make your own, I think he sells them now, so pop on over to his site and buy one if you want to.

So here’s my spin on it.

First of all I used foam, it’s like $.35 a sheet at the craft store.

This just a trapezoid, sorry for the weird angles of the photos, again with the I was tired and in a hurry.  My spin on this was that I didn’t really measure it out like Peter Gregg suggested.  I just cut a piece of foam in half, and guestimated the bottom wide enough to wrap around my flash a bit and then cut diagonally until I reached the top corner.

Then I got out my velcro, tape, and stapler again.  I ran a piece of loop (soft) velcro along the length of the bottom of the bounce card I ran a piece of black along the same position on the opposite side, and stapled the ends.  Be sure to read up on my cinch strap for an explanation of the tape and staples.

And this is what it looks like.  And it works very well, BTW.

This one was actually made for a flash with a smaller head, so it wraps around a little more.  I prefer the way it fits the other flash, I will be making some that are a little wider at the bottom for these flashes.
